The Importance of Childbirth Education

Birth is an exciting and beautiful thing. Unfortunately, for the uneducated woman, it can also be a bit scary. While this is understandable considering the way society portrays the birthing process, it is important to keep in mind that this portrayal is only a reflection of the miseducation being spread on the topic.

Instead of allowing fear to control your birthing experience, why not educate yourself on the process and take control of your birth? Trust me when I say you’ll be glad you did.

So how exactly can you go about informing yourself on the facts of childbirth? There are, of course, books and videos you can watch. However, the most valuable tool you can use for broadening your knowledge base on this topic is the large number of birthing classes out there.

Childbirth classes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and by finding one or two that work well for you and your partner, you will experience a number of benefits. These include:

A Decrease in Fear Levels

That fear I mentioned before? It is unnecessary, and can actually stall the labor process. By educating yourself on exactly what is going to happen when you give birth and having some control over the process, you can let go of fear and relax. This will make the entire experience much easier and more enjoyable for all involved.

And yes, I do think giving birth can be enjoyable—if uncomfortable at times—when you go in with the right mindset.

The Ability to Make Informed Decisions

Far too many women go into labor with a passive attitude. Often, this leads to unnecessary interventions and an unpleasant birthing experience. This in turn leads to the spread of negative myths surrounding childbirth, creating a perpetual cycle of birthing fears. Additionally, those unpleasant experiences can lead to postpartum depression, something no woman should have to deal with.

By educating yourself, you can make informed decisions about the way you would like your birth to go and learn to recognize when an intervention is unnecessary. This knowledge is an incredibly powerful tool, and when used in conjunction with a good doula, can make an enormous difference in how your delivery goes.

An Increase in Pain Management Options

In addition to giving a woman the ability to make educated decisions for herself, childbirth class also offer her a variety of pain management options. This is incredibly helpful no matter where you plan to birth, and can even be useful to those women who wish to have an epidural. Who knows? Maybe those ladies will manage their pain so well, they won’t feel the need to have an epidural.

More Partner Involvement

As a final bonus, a good childbirth class will help your partner know how and when they can help during your labor. It will give them the tools and information they need to be supportive without being a nuisance. This helps give your partner some involvement in the birthing process, something they might otherwise feel quite detached from.

As you can see, there are a good number of amazing benefits offered by a high-quality childbirth class. For this reason, I highly recommend taking a class or two on the subject of childbirth in the months leading up to your little one’s arrival.
